THE FUTURE OF OUR FOOD
on Thursday 30 April, 7.30pm in the Assembly Hall, Lambeth Town Hall (Acre Lane entrance) £2 suggested donation.

Rosie Boycott, London Food Advisor, Farmer and Campaigner
Claire Milne, Bristol's Sustainable Food Coordinator
will speak on Food Security and localising food systems in our cities.

Our current food system invests 10 calories of fossil energy to get 1 calorie of food energy out. We import more than 40% of our food. As oil and gas supplies dwindle this will present problems. In the city we are reliant on supermarket distribution chains, but supermarkets only hold enough food to feed us all for three days, leaving us "nine meals away from anarchy" should our imports be interrupted. But there are ways we can help to change our food system to make ourselves more self-reliant - even in London!

The Future of Our Food programme of events and workshops

aims to highlight the issues we face and initiate constructive, practical thinking and action on solutions for feeding Brixton into the future. Future topics will include:

  • Andre Viljoen and Mikey Tompkins on their research into real potential for London to supply 30% of its own needs in fresh veg;
  • Paul Richens and others from across London, and locally, who have set up successful food growing projects.
  • Wild food walks around an estate in Brixton
  • Introduction to Permaculture course, 25-26 July (email ttbfood@gmail.com to book.)
  • Workshops run by Food Up Front and others on growing in small spaces, composting and food waste
  • Culminating in an Open Space day at which Brixton will generate and plan its own local food revolution timeline!
