Our Story

 

2006

First Transition Town founded in Totnes, Devon by Permaculture teacher Rob Hopkins to encourage people to work together on positive, practical steps towards a brighter, greener future - rethinking, reconnecting and relocalising with our local communities.

 

2007

Members of Lambeth Climate Action Group become inspired by the growing Transition movement and establish one of the UK’s first city-based Transition groups in Brixton.

 

 

2008

Transition Town Brixton (TTB) receives first funding from Awards for All and unleashes Transition Town Brixton at Lambeth Town Hall, attended by over 600 people.

Working groups established in Transport, Buildings and Energy, Economy and Business, Food and Growing, and Waste (Remade in Brixton).

 

2009

TTB’s newsletter mailing list exceeds 1,000 people. Local currency the Brixton Pound is launched.

 

2010

TTB becomes community interest company with a mission to benefit the community and support projects of active members.

TTB establishes community shop in Granville Arcade.

TTB creates first paid jobs to support local groups, the shop and Brixton's Low Carbon Zone.

Regular Our Space open evenings commence at Loughborough Centre.

A Council-owned site of disused garages identified for Remade In Brixton's vision for a Reuse Centre.

2011

The Community Shop closes and the Transition Centre is established in Robsart Street.

Brixton Reuse Centre secures 100,000 in funding from Lambeth Council and rebrands as The Remakery.

Brixton People’s Kitchen builds cycle powered mobile kitchen at Remakery to prepare and provide food to the local community from surplus supplies destined for landfill.

Brixton Pound launches B e-currency (Be) and ‘pay-by-text’ payments for mobile phones.

2012

Brixton Energy Solar 1 and 2 launched on Loughborough Estate.

Brixton Pound and Brixton Energy feature on Earthrise documentary on Aljazeera TV.

TTB host Transition Tours in Brixton for international Transition Network members and local authority representatives from Norway.

First Restart Party and repair caf held at Transition Centre.

Architecture for Humanity support planning application for The Remakery and on-site work commences.

 

2013

Lambeth REconomy project is launched (with funding from the Transition Network and Network for Social Change) to support the incubation and development of local transition enterprises. 

Brixton Energy Solar 3’s launch at Roupell Park is attended by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Ed Davey

Architecture for Humanity run co-design workshops at The Remakery.

TTB celebrates 5th birthday party at Effra Social.

 

2014

Local Enterprise Uprise and Entrepreneur Forum Warm Up events held at Impact Hub Brixton as part of REconomy project

2015

Brixton Pound launches contactless payment platform for using B.

Local Entrepreneur Forum held at Brixton East is attended by Transition founder Rob Hopkins and secures pledges of over 5,435 in monetary and in-kind value for up and coming Transition enterprises.

 

2016

Open Projects Night (OPN) launches at POP Brixton as collaboration between TTB and Impact Hub Brixton 

Brixton Pound cafe established in Atlantic Road.

The Remakery launches Open Workshop Thursdays for collaborative design and make sessions using reclaimed materials.

TTB organises ‘Local Food is Growing’ - a series of events at OPN supporting local food initiatives.

 

2017

TTB partners with Social Landscapes and Col-lectiu Eco-Actiu to secure Erasmus funding for Transition Leaders Training programme at Eco Dharma in Catalonia, Spain.

‘Local Food is the Business’ event at OPN.

2018

The Remakery ‘Re-use Lab’ craft workshops headline at Brixton Design Trail.

TTB and Incredible Edible Lambeth curate programme of food events, including tours, talks, tastings, markets and films.

TTB 10th birthday celebration held at Impact Hub Brixton.

TTB leads work on ‘Preparing locally for a No Deal Brexit’ event at OPN.

TTB partners with local environment groups and Lambeth Council to support the Lambeth Citizens’ Assembly in finding solutions to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.

TTB leads workshops on imagining the future at the Lambeth Council Partnership annual meeting.

TTB takes part in hosting talks at the Extinction Rebellion protests in London.

Healthy Living Platform is founded to promote the health and well being of the local community through nutrition, cookery, food growing and wider health issues.

2020

TTB leads deputation of coalition of groups asking for Lambeth Council to ensure Citizens’ Assembly is more open and participatory.

Lambeth Community Solar raises 137,000 for installing solar panels at two Lambeth schools.

TTB attends Speak Up for the Climate event in Herne Hill
