Projects
Transition Town Brixton has helped inspire, develop and create the following projects in these areas:
Money & Jobs
The Brixton Pound is Brixton’s very own alternative currency, supporting the local economy and getting people thinking and talking about money, localisation and community.
The Lambeth Reconomy Project seeks to foster the ‘new economy’, more local, cooperative, and sustainable. We reported on the benefits of localising the food and energy economy. We held the first Local Enterpreneurs’ Forum in 2015 to link up transition entrepreneurs with ‘community dragons’. Several new projects have been supported through this scheme, including the Library of Things. This work continued through Open Project Night below.
Open Project Night is a collaboration between TTB and Impact Hub Brixton to support the incubation of peer-led community business ideas and provide a free facilitated weekly space for community organising. We convened events such as Local Food is Growing and Local Food is the Business.
Energy
Brixton Energy was formed to put community owned renewable energy generation on Brixton’s roofs. Brixton Energy Solar 1, 2 and 3 are now providing 134 kWp of renewable power into the heart of three of Brixton’s housing estates -that’s enough to provide all the electricity needs of around 37 average sized homes. Repowering grew out of Brixton Energy and has helped initiate projects in Hackney, Vauxhall and North Kensington and now Lambeth Community Solar putting solar on school roofs.
Food & Growth
Incredible Edible Lambeth is a network that grew out of our Future of our Food work linking food growers and activists who are working to support local food growing, food entrepreneurs and food activism in our communities.
Similarly the Lambeth Food Partnership leads on food policy work in Lambeth.
Healthy Living Platform puts food at the heart of communities through community cooking, food buying coops, cooking demonstrations and workshops, redistributing surplus food, and avoiding food waste.
Reuse
The Remakery is Brixton’s Reuse Centre. With a collection of materials, the workshop on Lilford Road provides opportunities and reskilling to develop creative businesses and find new uses for Brixton’s salvage.
Spaces of Hope
is a series of community conversations exploring how we want to live, and, crucially, how we can all get there.
What If Lambeth?
is a community project collecting ideas from people in our borough about how you want it to be in the future.
